“Met Gala 2026: Controversy, Criticism, and Couture Clash”

The upcoming edition of a renowned New York event, the annual fashion show and fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, faces challenges this year not due to declining attendance or budget issues, but rather criticism, negative publicity, and calls for a boycott.

Despite the controversies, the event scheduled for May 4 will continue in all its splendor with the theme “Costume Art,” aiming to showcase fashion as a continuous thread throughout art history. The chosen dress code, “Fashion is Art,” provides flexibility for attendees on the red carpet. Curator Andrew Bolton expressed his hope that the theme would help eliminate outdated debates on whether fashion should be considered part of the art world.

The 2026 Met Gala, which raised over $31 million last year and now has a new spacious venue of 1,115 square meters, promises a stunning display. This year’s gala will mark the inauguration of the Condé M. Nast Galleries, transformed from the former museum retail space.

Noteworthy changes for this year’s event include the inclusion of mannequins representing historically marginalized body types in the exhibit curated by Bolton. The star-studded gala boasts notable figures like Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Beyoncé as co-chairs, with the event marking Beyoncé’s return after a decade.

The gala’s “host committee” comprises prominent personalities such as designer Anthony Vaccarello and filmmaker Zoë Kravitz, along with a diverse lineup from Sabrina Carpenter to Misty Copeland. New additions to the committee include Angela Bassett and Aimee Mullins.

However, the gala’s association with Amazon, with Jeff Bezos and wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos as honorary chairs and primary funders, has sparked controversy. Critics have mounted protests against the event, linking it to issues like worker exploitation and Amazon’s alleged involvement with controversial activities.

Despite the backlash, the Met Gala, known for its exclusivity and opulence, continues to draw attention, with individual tickets priced at $100,000 and tables starting at $350,000. The event’s elitist nature has drawn criticism in a city grappling with widening wealth disparities.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s decision to skip the gala underscores concerns over its cultural relevance and exclusivity. As the event navigates ongoing challenges and transitions, including Vogue editor Anna Wintour’s impending retirement, questions arise about the gala’s future and sustainability without her leadership.

Despite uncertainties and criticisms, the Costume Institute has built a financial reserve from past gala proceeds to ensure its continuity, even in the face of potential disruptions. As preparations for the 2026 Met Gala unfold, the event remains scheduled to proceed as planned.
