Christian Herridge, aged 50, has faced numerous health challenges, including schizophrenia, a heart condition, and osteoporosis. In addition to these issues, recent brain damage has necessitated him to relearn basic motor skills and speech. His primary goal is to return to his parents’ residence in Mahone Bay, N.S., following over 16 months of hospitalization.
Despite the hospital’s efforts to discharge Christian, the process has been complex. Ruth Herridge, his mother, believes the provincial government should offer more support in this regard. She emphasizes the importance of familial care for individuals with medical needs, highlighting the struggle to bring Christian home due to housing limitations.
The Herridge family seeks to modify their home to better accommodate Christian’s requirements. While they received assistance for a chair lift, they find it inadequate for their small living space. Their aim is to construct a ground-floor bedroom for easier accessibility to essential facilities, but they face challenges due to stringent eligibility criteria for government retrofitting programs.
Although Christian relies on social assistance, financial constraints hinder the family’s ability to make necessary home adjustments. Despite Ruth Herridge’s efforts to seek aid from the Nova Scotia Department of Growth and Development, they were deemed ineligible for home repair support based on their savings exceeding the set limit.
While the province offers some homecare services and disability aids, the Herridges continue to navigate financial obstacles. Their local PC MLA’s office is assisting in exploring alternative avenues for support. Despite the financial hurdles, the family is determined to facilitate Christian’s return home, albeit without extensive renovations, to prevent institutionalization.
Ruth Herridge advocates for increased financial aid to assist families in transitioning patients from hospitals to home care. The province’s incremental adjustments to total household investment limits aim to address such challenges. The Herridge family remains committed to providing a supportive environment for Christian, ensuring his well-being upon returning home.
