Dejon Brissett made a pivotal play in the intense Labour Day rivalry game between the Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. His impressive 63-yard reception with one second left on the clock set up a game-winning field goal by Lirim Hajrullahu, leading the Argonauts to a thrilling 35-33 victory.
Brissett caught a pass from Nick Arbuckle near the Tiger-Cats’ four-yard line, narrowly avoiding stepping out of bounds before the time expired. After a review, one second was added back on the clock, giving Hajrullahu the opportunity to secure the win.
Despite being urged by Arbuckle and head coach Ryan Dinwiddie to step out of bounds earlier, Brissett was determined to push for a touchdown. His game-changing catch in double coverage ultimately sealed the victory for Toronto.
The back-and-forth game saw Hamilton take a late lead with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Bo Levi Mitchell to Kenny Lawler. However, Toronto’s strong kickoff return and Brissett’s heroics turned the tide in the final moments.
This win marked Toronto’s first victory in five matchups against Hamilton this season, leveling the series at 1-1. The teams are set to face each other again on October 4 at BMO Field.
Hamilton’s head coach, Scott Milanovich, acknowledged the team’s shortcomings in various aspects of the game despite the close contest. Both Arbuckle and Mitchell delivered standout performances, but it was Brissett’s late-game heroics that stole the show.
In the upcoming games, the Argonauts will host the Edmonton Elks, while the Tiger-Cats will visit the Montreal Alouettes.
The Labour Day clash added another chapter to the historic rivalry between the two teams, showcasing the intensity and excitement that define Canadian football.
