In St. Mary’s, Newfoundland, a devastating fire has completely destroyed the local fish processing plant amidst severe hurricane winds and heavy rainfall. Mayor Steve Ryan confirmed the fire incident, noting his immediate response to the scene where significant damage had already occurred to the facility owned by St. Mary’s Bay Fisheries.
Despite the efforts of three fire crews, the relentless hurricane-force winds hindered their firefighting attempts, with the structure being engulfed in flames before they could effectively intervene. Meteorologist Rodney Barney reported wind gusts reaching up to 172 km/h at Cape St. Mary’s during the destructive storm.
Expressing profound sadness, Liberal MHA Sherry Gambin-Walsh conveyed her heartbreak over the tragic loss suffered by the community. She emphasized the profound impact of the plant’s destruction, stating that community members are witnessing the destruction of their primary source of employment.
The community is left reeling from the devastation as they come to terms with the loss of a vital economic asset.
