A new method for extracting lithium, known as direct lithium extraction (DLE), may revolutionize the mining of lithium brines found in Western Canada. This technology offers a potentially more eco-friendly approach compared to conventional methods. Companies are progressing towards demonstrating the effectiveness of DLE at a larger scale.
Alberta is an appealing location for lithium extraction due to its abundant infrastructure from previous oil and gas operations. LithiumBank, a mining company in the province, holds licenses for two lithium projects and is repurposing old wells to access underground brines containing lithium, a crucial component in clean energy batteries.
Traditional lithium extraction methods involve mining rocks in Australia or extracting lithium from brines in South America, like Chile’s Atacama desert. In arid regions like Chile, lithium brines are evaporated to concentrate the lithium. However, DLE methods, such as those researched by Ngai Yin Yip at Columbia University, use chemical processes to directly extract lithium without relying on solar evaporation.
Canadian brines present a challenge as they cannot undergo natural evaporation. Yip’s team recently published a study on a new solvent capable of extracting lithium from brines in the lab. Similarly, LithiumBank has conducted pilot tests on its DLE technology, successfully producing battery-grade lithium.
Compared to other extraction methods, DLE has shown to be more environmentally friendly, especially when powered by clean energy sources. Ehsan Vahidi from the University of Nevada, Reno, compared the environmental impacts of various lithium extraction methods, emphasizing the importance of reducing energy emissions in DLE processes. By utilizing renewable energy like solar power, the environmental footprint of lithium extraction can be significantly minimized.
As global demand for lithium rises, driven by electric vehicle production and renewable energy storage, innovative approaches like DLE could play a crucial role in sustainable lithium extraction.
