“Liberals and Bloc Reject Conservative Budget Challenge”

The Conservative party’s sub-amendment on the budget was rejected by the Liberals, Bloc Québécois, and NDP during a vote on Thursday evening. This sub-amendment aimed to challenge a Bloc Québécois proposal urging the House to oppose the budget, with a decision on the Bloc amendment scheduled for Friday.

A Liberal spokesperson stated that both votes were regarded as matters of confidence by the government. If the government were to lose a confidence vote, it typically results in a federal election. However, the likelihood of triggering a new election following Thursday’s vote was minimal, as the interim NDP Leader confirmed that all seven NDP MPs would oppose the Conservative sub-amendment.

It is important to note that the outcome of Thursday’s vote does not guarantee full support from all Bloc or NDP MPs for the budget itself. The final budget vote is anticipated later in the month after a one-week recess for Remembrance Day.

Bloc Leader Yves-François Blanchet proposed the initial amendment, arguing that the budget did not meet the party’s expectations. The subsequent Conservative sub-amendment sought to condemn the budget for failing to align with Conservative viewpoints, leading to the Bloc rejecting the Conservative proposal.

The Liberal government introduced the budget, which includes significant spending to address economic challenges from U.S. tariffs and public service cuts aimed at generating savings. Despite a procedural error by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre in amending the budget, it is unlikely to impact the budget’s fate or the government’s standing.
