“Measles Outbreak Hits Northwestern Ontario”

The Northwestern Health Unit has reported its initial case of measles in the area amidst a surge in measles spread across the province and the country, prompting a temporary outbreak declaration in Ontario. The case was identified in the Kenora region, with the diagnosed individual adhering to recommended public health protocols.

According to Kit Young Hoon, the medical officer of health for the Northwestern Health Unit, measles is a highly contagious virus that can lead to severe illness. Symptoms typically begin with general malaise, coughing, sneezing, a runny nose, red and watery eyes, and a fever. Subsequently, a rash usually develops on the face, spreading to the body. Complications may include pneumonia, ear infections, and even blindness, underscoring the importance of understanding the associated risks.

Since the autumn of 2024, Canada has recorded over 5,000 measles cases across nine provinces and one territory. Earlier this year, the Public Health Agency of Canada announced the loss of Canada’s measles elimination status.

Young Hoon noted that the individual in Kenora may have exposed others at the emergency department of Lake of the Woods District Hospital and an event at the Kenora Public Library. Potential exposures at the hospital occurred on December 22, 26, or 27, and at the library on December 23. Detailed information on possible exposure dates and times can be accessed on the Northwestern Health Unit website.

Individuals showing symptoms following exposure are advised to undergo testing for measles, potentially necessitating further precautions and contact tracing. Those who might have been exposed are urged to review their vaccination records to confirm receipt of two measles vaccine doses or assess other potential risks.

Young Hoon emphasized the importance of receiving the second vaccine dose if exposed and lacking the recommended two doses. For individuals born before 1970 or previously infected, immunity is likely, but those uncertain about their immunity status are encouraged to contact the Northwestern Health Unit for guidance.
