Police are currently looking into a break-in that occurred at a residence belonging to Oklahoma City Thunder player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on Friday. The incident took place while Gilgeous-Alexander, who hails from Hamilton, Ont., was engaged in a game the previous night.
Authorities in Nichols Hills, located north of downtown Oklahoma City, are handling the investigation. The identity of the homeowner and the items taken during the burglary have not been disclosed by the police.
The burglary was reported around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, coinciding with the Thunder’s game against the Washington Wizards. Despite police presence at the scene, the suspects had already left. However, law enforcement assured the public that there is no immediate danger.
This break-in aligns with a series of similar incidents involving prominent athletes in the U.S. in recent times. Notable figures like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Joe Burrow from the NFL, Luka Doncic from the NBA, and Evgeni Malkin from the NHL have fallen victim to such crimes.
To address these security concerns, the NBA issued a memo in November 2024 advising teams to enhance home security measures. Recommendations included installing updated alarm systems with cameras, using secure safes for valuables, securing online property listings to prevent interior exposure, engaging protective services during extended absences, and employing guard dogs for added protection.
