Saskatchewan Roughriders enthusiasts will have the opportunity to partake in tailgating festivities outside Mosaic Stadium, as the province unveiled its anticipated tailgating legislation on Thursday. The recently introduced Tailgating Act modifies the Alcohol Control Regulations in the province to permit tailgating in a parking lot adjacent to the Roughriders stadium during their home games.
Craig Reynolds, CEO and President of the Roughriders, emphasized that the modification, allowing tailgating exclusively for season ticket-holders, is not primarily aimed at enhancing the team’s financial performance but rather as a gesture of appreciation to fans. Reynolds expressed expectations of high demand among season ticket holders for pregame celebrations, followed by attending the games.
The plan is to commence with a “manageable” group and potentially expand the initiative thereafter, as outlined by Reynolds. If the legislation is approved, supervision of the tailgating area will be overseen by staff, likely from Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL). Controlled vehicle access and enforcement of conduct standards are among the province’s specified guidelines for the tailgating space.
Alana Ross, the minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority, highlighted that the regulations will necessitate a permit and close coordination with SLGA. Ross stressed the collaborative efforts to ensure the success of the initiative for the benefit of Roughriders fans, the team, and the City of Regina.
The provincial legislation stemmed from an initiative by the Roughriders earlier this year, according to Reynolds. He mentioned ongoing communication with CFL teams like Calgary and Edmonton regarding their tailgating policies, with plans to broaden the research to encompass other markets.
The new regulations are set to be in place for the 2026 CFL season, with the initial scope limited to events at Mosaic Stadium during Saskatchewan Roughriders home games. Potential expansion of eligibility is anticipated following the conclusion of the 2026 CFL season.
