“Sony to Cease Physical Disc Production for PlayStation Games by 2028”

Sony announced that starting in 2028, they will no longer produce physical discs for new PlayStation games, shifting focus to digital downloads. This decision has sparked concerns among gamers about ownership of their collections. The company stated that all new PlayStation game releases will be exclusively available through the online PlayStation Store, with retail copies offered solely in digital formats. Existing and upcoming games with retail versions will continue to be accessible on disc.

In alignment with evolving consumer preferences favoring digital media, Sony Interactive Entertainment sees this move as a natural progression. The company also revealed plans to close online stores for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita in certain markets this year, expanding globally in 2027 due to compatibility issues with modern commerce systems.

Additionally, the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI will be launched with a download code instead of a physical disc. Sony, a key player in the development of CD-based video games, alongside Philips, popularized the compact disc format in the 1990s with the introduction of the first PlayStation console.

Game sales have increasingly shifted towards digital platforms, with significant percentages of sales coming from digital downloads. Despite this trend, physical game sales remain substantial, especially for Nintendo. While sales of physical games in the U.S. have declined over the years, the appeal of physical media in gaming is not expected to mirror the resurgence seen in other entertainment sectors.

The announcement drew negative reactions from gamers and industry figures alike, expressing disappointment and concerns about the impact on game preservation and consumer choice. The shift towards an all-digital future, as indicated by Sony’s decision, is seen as a strategic move to optimize revenue streams and reduce costs. This shift may potentially lead to future PlayStation consoles without disc drives, embracing a fully digital ecosystem.
