South Korean Cyclist Pedals Across North America, Embraced by Canadian Kindness

A man from South Korea is currently cycling across North America, starting from British Columbia and aiming to reach Montreal, with the support and kindness of Canadians along the way. Seongmin Ji, dressed in black with a navy blue toque, is easily spotted pedaling along the Sea to Sky Highway. His bicycle stands out, adorned with license plates from various places like Alaska, Utah, Guatemala, and British Columbia, with each plate representing a unique encounter with locals who have helped him on his journey.

Having already cycled through South America and Central America, Ji, at 28 years old, is now set on covering over 5,000 kilometers to Montreal in a span of two months. He mentioned that his motivation for this adventure is personal growth, pushing his limits, and inspiring others. Starting his trip in Ushuaia, Argentina, he made his way to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, before hitchhiking to Kitwanga, B.C., and eventually cycling down to Squamish, with plans to continue towards Washington.

Ji shared that upon arriving in Canada, he relied on the generosity of strangers who welcomed him into their homes. Utilizing the Warm Showers platform, a website connecting touring cyclists with local hosts, Ji found shelter, showers, and even laundry facilities through the kindness of Canadians. During his stay in Smithers, B.C., Rory Luxmoore hosted Ji, and the experience left a strong impression on Luxmoore, who praised Ji’s maturity and passion despite his young age.

Despite his remarkable accomplishments, Ji remained humble and quiet, surprising those he met with his peaceful and engaging demeanor. While in Smithers, Ji even joined a local cycling group for a ride, further immersing himself in the community. Ji expressed his gratitude for the warm reception he received from Canadians, emphasizing their love for bicycles, especially mountain biking.

Throughout his journey, Ji sustains himself with podcasts and peanut-butter sandwiches, finding motivation in the kindness of those who have supported him. Inspired by Canadian hero Terry Fox, Ji envisions giving back upon his return to South Korea by running across the country to raise funds for cancer charity.
