The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball team has been successful in recruiting international players over the past decade, despite Saskatoon not being a popular winter vacation spot. This strategy has contributed to the team winning three national championships under the guidance of head coach Lisa Thomaidis, who has an extensive network in Canada and Germany due to her coaching background.
One of the key international recruits was Latvian guard Sabine Dukate in 2016, who played a vital role in the team’s success. Currently, the Huskies boast two international players, Swedish forward Olivia Harm and English guard Charli Wroe, both adding depth to the team.
Harm, who hails from Sweden, was recruited by Thomaidis out of high school and was attracted to the program due to its strong reputation and academic offerings. On the other hand, Wroe, originally from Manchester, chose to come to the U of S after spending time in the U.S., citing the political climate and educational opportunities as deciding factors.
The adjustment to life in Saskatoon has been a learning curve for the international players, with Harm mentioning the cultural differences and Wroe expressing concerns about the cold weather. However, both players are eager to contribute to the team’s success and are looking forward to the challenge ahead.
Thomaidis emphasized the importance of the international players in the team’s future success, highlighting Harm’s versatility and shooting ability, as well as Wroe’s experience and potential as a point guard backup. The Huskies are determined to defend their national title, with the players focused on continuous improvement and achieving their goals as a team.
With a strong start to the season, winning their first four games convincingly, the Huskies are gearing up to face the Manitoba Bisons in their upcoming matches in Winnipeg. The team’s international talent and cohesive gameplay have set them on a path towards another successful season.
