Vince Horsman Reflects on Blue Jays’ Playoff Journey

Watching the Toronto Blue Jays in their current playoff journey, Vince Horsman reflects on the team’s resemblance to a bygone era of baseball. Horsman, a southpaw pitcher hailing from Dartmouth, N.S., had a stint with the Jays in 1991, playing 141 games over five seasons in the major leagues.

In a baseball landscape dominated by analytics and power-driven strategies, Horsman notes the Blue Jays’ distinctive approach. He highlights their willingness to utilize the entire field, blending power hitters with a more traditional style of play reminiscent of yesteryears.

Speaking to CBC News ahead of Game 2 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Horsman expressed his admiration for the Jays and the strong support they receive from Canadian fans. Currently a pitching coach with the 7-Eleven Unilions in Tainan City, Taiwan, Horsman has dedicated over four decades to professional baseball, transitioning from player to coach and working across various countries.

Horsman’s journey into professional baseball began unexpectedly at a national midget tournament in Moncton, N.B., in 1984, catching the eye of a Jays scout. Despite initial setbacks, including the scout’s illness, Horsman’s standout performance led to a contract offer. His career with the Jays saw him progressing through their farm system, culminating in his major league debut in 1991.

Transitioning from AA to the majors was a surreal experience for Horsman, who found himself facing players he had only seen in video games. Despite the pressure, he embraced the challenge, emphasizing the universal nature of baseball and the importance of composure on the mound.

As the only Nova Scotian to play for the Blue Jays and one of a few from the province to reach the majors, Horsman’s time with the team during their strong 1991 season left a lasting impression. Subsequent years saw him pitching for the Oakland Athletics and the Minnesota Twins before embarking on a coaching career that has taken him worldwide.

Reflecting on his journey, Horsman acknowledges his blessings and the diverse experiences baseball has afforded him. With a passion for history, he envisions a parallel life as a school teacher, emphasizing his immersion in local cultures during his travels as a coach.

In a remarkable career that spans playing and coaching, Horsman’s ties to baseball have not only shaped his professional life but also enriched his understanding of the world around him.
