WestJet has implemented a price hike for checked baggage fees, effective immediately. Passengers checking bags at the airport will now pay an additional $10 per bag for the first and second bags, while those paying in advance will see a $5 increase per bag for the same.
This adjustment marks the third increase in baggage fees by WestJet in as many years and follows the airline’s most recent fee hike less than a year ago. The airline attributed the fee changes to industry trends and the impact of current global conditions.
Passengers on WestJet’s ultra-basic fares in Canada can expect to pay between $60 and $93 for the first bag and $75 to $111 for the second. For standard econo passengers within Canada, the fees range from $45 to $81 for the first bag and $60 to $99 for the second.
Travelers heading to Asia or Europe may face baggage fees ranging from $85 to $123 for a single checked bag on ultra-basic fares. Excess, overweight, and oversized baggage fees have seen the most significant increase, with a $50 hike. In some instances, an overweight bag could incur charges of up to $168.
This move by WestJet follows a similar adjustment by Air Canada, which recently raised baggage fees for economy basic passengers. Additionally, fuel surcharges have been introduced by both Air Canada and WestJet for certain bookings and vacation packages. Air Transat has also indicated adjustments to fares or fuel surcharges in response to rising costs.
The surge in jet fuel prices, primarily due to international tensions impacting supply chains, has prompted airlines like Air Canada and Air Transat to reduce routes and adjust pricing. Air travel experts suggest that the combination of higher surcharges and reduced flight options may lead to sustained high travel costs in the near future.
