SUV Crashes into ER: Driver Assaults Paramedics

Police are currently investigating a car crash incident at Cowichan District Hospital’s emergency room in Duncan on Vancouver Island. The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. PT on Saturday when a black Chevrolet Traverse SUV was found lodged in the hospital’s entrance doors. Images of the vehicle inside the ER waiting room quickly made rounds on social media.

The driver, a 42-year-old woman, reportedly assaulted two paramedics who came to her aid, resulting in minor injuries to one of the paramedics. Fortunately, no hospital staff or patients were harmed during the incident. Paramedics in British Columbia are employed by B.C. Emergency Health Services, not by the hospitals.

Authorities managed to subdue and apprehend the driver under the Mental Health Act. Island Health has confirmed that there is no significant structural damage to the building, and temporary doors have been installed in the affected area without impacting patient access.

The health authority emphasized that emergency medical services at the hospital are available for those in need. The timeline for permanent repairs and associated costs remains uncertain. Island Health expressed gratitude for the prompt response of their staff and the support from North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP. Individuals with relevant information are urged to reach out to the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP for assistance.
