“Canadian Screen Awards Honor Mike Myers and Hazel Mae”

The Canadian Screen Awards are gearing up to recognize actor Mike Myers, sportscaster Hazel Mae, and others during this year’s Canadian Screen Week. Myers, Mae, maxine bailey, the executive director of the Canadian Film Centre, and filmmaker Chandler Levack’s film “Mile End Kicks” will be acknowledged for their significant impact in the film and television industry.

Tammy Frick, CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television (known as the Canadian Academy), expressed that these individuals’ exceptional accomplishments not only serve as inspiration for future storytellers but also highlight Canada’s remarkable talent and innovation in screen arts on a global scale.

Canadian Screen Week is scheduled to take place in Toronto from May 27 to May 31, culminating in the Canadian Screen Awards ceremony honoring excellence in the country’s cinema, television, and digital media.

Mike Myers, the Toronto-born actor renowned for his roles in “Saturday Night Live,” “Austin Powers,” and “Shrek,” will be receiving the prestigious Academy Icon Award this year. The Canadian Academy presents this award to individuals or institutions from Canada who have made exceptional and ongoing contributions to the media industry at home and abroad, recognizing Myers as one of the most versatile performers of his generation.

Hazel Mae, a prominent figure in Canadian sportscasting and a familiar presence at Toronto Blue Jays games, will be bestowed with the Gordon Sinclair Award for Broadcast Journalism by the academy. Recognized for her exceptional work, Mae captured the highs and lows of the Blue Jays’ World Series journey last year, where their championship dreams were dashed in a Game 7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

maxine bailey, the executive director of the Canadian Film Centre, will be honored with the Changemaker Award for her efforts in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in Canadian media. Bailey’s work aims to confront racism and discrimination, amplify underrepresented perspectives, and drive systemic change within the industry.

Chandler Levack’s film “Mile End Kicks” will be recognized with the Sustainable Production Award for its meaningful environmental leadership in both production practices and sustainability portrayals. The film showcases the music scene in Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood and exemplifies sustainable practices by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, supporting local businesses, and promoting eco-friendly transportation for the cast and crew.

The Canadian Screen Awards ceremony, hosted by actor Andrew Phung, will be broadcast on CBC and streamed on CBC Gem at 8 p.m. ET on May 31. This year’s event will also be simulcast on Bell-owned CTV and Crave, as well as Corus-owned Global and STACKTV.
