Rare footage capturing a sperm whale giving birth has provided scientists with valuable insights into the behavior of these large and mysterious marine mammals. The video, filmed in 2023, showcases female whales from two distinct family lines collaborating to assist during the birthing process, including lifting the newborn calf above the water. This remarkable level of coordination is rarely observed in the animal kingdom, particularly outside of primate species like monkeys and humans.

Historically, there have been only a few documented instances of sperm whale births in the past six decades, mostly recounted anecdotally or recorded from whaling vessels. In a recent study published in the journal Science, researchers documented this exceptional event, analyzed drone footage, and uncovered indications of cooperation among both related and unrelated sperm whales in aiding newborns.

On a morning in July 2023, scientists studying whale communication off the coast of Dominica in the Caribbean were treated to an extraordinary sight. Eleven whales, predominantly females, surfaced together, engaging in synchronized movements above and below the water’s surface. Promptly deploying drones and microphones, the researchers captured the entire delivery process, which lasted approximately 30 minutes. Subsequently, pairs of whales supported the newborn calf above water until it could swim independently.

Describing the experience as “special,” study co-author David Gruber from the Cetacean Translation Initiative (Project CETI) highlighted the exceptional nature of the event. Post-birth, the researchers developed software to analyze the collaborative efforts witnessed. The display of support from numerous mothers, sisters, and daughters, even those unrelated, underscores the tight-knit, female-led social structure of sperm whale groups, showcasing solidarity during crucial moments.

Notably, the whales emitted distinct vocalizations during key birthing moments, as revealed in a second report published by the journal Scientific Reports. These patterns of clicks, akin to Morse code, may have facilitated communication and synchronization among the whales during the birth process. Additionally, the researchers speculated that the whales’ vocalizations could have symbolized a form of celebration akin to human customs.

The groundbreaking observations have raised several intriguing questions about the formation and coordination of whale groups during such events, shedding light on the animals’ hidden interactions. While answers may require further exploration due to the rarity of such footage, the findings offer a glimpse into the intricate social dynamics of sperm whales, leaving researchers and biologists excited about unraveling more mysteries of these fascinating creatures.
