U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a scheduled meeting with New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House this Friday, marking the first encounter between the Republican leader and the democratic socialist who recently secured victory in the mayoral election. The relationship between Mamdani and Trump has been characterized by mutual criticism, with Trump endorsing Mamdani’s opponent, Andrew Cuomo, while Mamdani has expressed disapproval of the Trump administration’s policies, particularly regarding immigration enforcement and U.S. support for Israel during the Gaza conflict.
Trump confirmed the meeting via social media, stating that it would take place in the Oval Office on November 21st. Mamdani had previously indicated his team’s outreach to the White House to arrange the meeting. A spokesperson for Mamdani shared that the mayor-elect intends to engage with Trump in Washington to discuss topics such as public safety, economic security, and an affordability agenda.
During the mayoral campaign, Trump had threatened to withhold significant federal funding from the city in the event of Mamdani’s victory. New York City is slated to receive $7.4 billion US in federal funding in the fiscal year 2026, accounting for approximately 6.4% of the city’s total expenditures, according to a report from the New York State Comptroller. Since Mamdani’s ascent, Trump has incorrectly labeled him as a “communist.”
Mamdani, who made challenging Trump’s policies, especially on immigration, a central theme of his successful campaign, emphasized during his victory speech the city’s role in defeating the president. He aims to “Trump-proof” New York upon assuming office in January, while also expressing willingness to collaborate with various parties, including the president, if it benefits New Yorkers. The inauguration of Mamdani as mayor is scheduled for January 1.
