“Alcatraz Bound: Coyote’s Unprecedented 3 km Ocean Swim”

A remarkable tale unfolded as a coyote swam an extraordinary three kilometers across ocean currents. Camilla Fox, the founder of Project Coyote, expressed her awe at the journey of the so-called “Alcatraz Coyote,” deeming it unprecedented in her experience with wild canines. This male coyote surprised biologists by crossing the San Francisco Bay to Alcatraz Island, a distance double what was initially estimated. Initially thought to have swum from San Francisco, the coyote actually embarked from Angel Island, a state park in California.

The bedraggled coyote’s arrival on Alcatraz Island on January 24 was met with astonishment, with witnesses describing its appearance as resembling a drowned rat as it struggled onto the rocky shoreline from the frigid waters. While scientists have confirmed the coyote’s successful journey to the island, the exact reason for its endeavor remains a mystery. Fox, however, has her own suspicions about the coyote’s motivations.
