Olympian Charles Philibert-Thiboutot Retires

Canadian athlete Charles Philibert-Thiboutot, a two-time Olympian, has decided to retire and is looking forward to some well-deserved rest. The 34-year-old concluded his 15-year career in track and road racing by making his marathon debut in New York City, finishing 21st in the professional men’s category with a time of two hours, 26 minutes, and 25 seconds.

Reflecting on his race, Philibert-Thiboutot mentioned that although the time wasn’t ideal, he managed to lead the pack in the first half, clocking 65 minutes and 20 seconds, which was faster than he had initially planned but felt good at the time. However, around the 28 to 29-kilometer mark of the 42.2-kilometer race, he began to experience cramps and faced a challenging moment.

Philibert-Thiboutot wraps up his career on a positive note, achieving personal best times in various indoor and outdoor events, including setting a national record in the Canadian 10K Road Running Championships. Throughout his career, he displayed remarkable performances, winning championships and setting records in different competitions.

The seasoned athlete made his mark in the 2016 Olympics and continued to compete at various prestigious events, showcasing his talent and determination. Despite facing setbacks like injuries and missing out on the Tokyo Olympics, Philibert-Thiboutot remained resilient and dedicated to his sport.

In the same event, Kenyan runners Hellen Obiri and Benson Kipruto made headlines by setting records in the women’s and men’s races, respectively. Obiri broke the women’s course record, finishing ahead of her competitors, while Kipruto clinched a thrilling victory in a tight finish. The New York City Marathon witnessed exceptional performances from elite athletes, making it a memorable event for both participants and spectators.
