Roman Sadovsky is fully embracing the upcoming challenge in the world of figure skating. The current national men’s champion remains unfazed by Keegan Messing’s return to the sport and is open to Stephen Gogolev’s resurgence, viewing the competition as a source of motivation.
A fierce competition looms for Canada’s single men’s spot at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics, a scenario that excites Sadovsky. The skater expresses his love for the competitive thrill, emphasizing that the presence of strong competitors only spurs him on further.
Taking part in the Skate Canada International event in Saskatoon alongside 17 other Canadian athletes, Sadovsky, hailing from Vaughan, Ont., clinched his second national title in Laval, Que., last January. Initially considered a frontrunner for the Olympic spot, his position was challenged by Messing’s comeback announcement in August.
Messing, a two-time Olympian, has garnered impressive scores surpassing those of any other Canadian male skater since his hiatus in 2023. However, the 33-year-old’s return to top form remains uncertain, despite emerging as a formidable contender.
Anticipating Messing’s return, Sadovsky was not caught off guard, having heard rumors beforehand. In response, he maintains his focus on training and goals, undeterred by external factors such as competitors’ comebacks.
Sadovsky’s coach, Tracey Wainman, highlights the skater’s ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances, citing past incidents such as filling in for Messing at the 2022 Olympics and facing travel challenges in subsequent competitions.
Notably, Messing, who recently displayed room for improvement in a domestic event, will not be participating in Skate Canada International. Sadovsky will face off against Gogolev for the third time this season, building on his victories at previous competitions.
Embracing the Olympic season with renewed vigor, Sadovsky attributes his success to enhanced mental maturity and focus. He acknowledges the transient nature of competitive sports, hinting that this season could potentially be his last, pending future decisions based on his performance and physical well-being.
Despite the uncertainties of the future, Sadovsky remains committed to enjoying his skating journey and making the most out of the current season. The heightened competition only adds to his enthusiasm, fueling his passion for the sport.
