A legal complaint alleges that Taylor Swift’s album “The Life of a Showgirl” has infringed on the branding of a real showgirl’s life. Maren Wade, the plaintiff, claims in a trademark infringement lawsuit filed in a U.S. federal court in California that Swift’s album from 2025 bears a resemblance to the aesthetic of her own creation, “Confessions of a Showgirl.” Wade, known for her column in the Las Vegas Weekly titled “Confessions of a Showgirl,” which later evolved into a live show and national tour, argues that both works share similar structures, dominant phrases, and overall commercial impressions, targeting the same consumer base.
Described as a “singer, songwriter, comedian, and writer” in the lawsuit under her legal name Maren Flagg, Wade’s “Showgirl” brand encompasses performances, writing, and digital media. Swift’s 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” released in October 2025, sold four million copies in its opening week. The album cover features Swift in Las Vegas cabaret attire, submerged in water, with an orange and mint green color scheme.
Following the lawsuit filing, Swift released a new music video for the album track “Elizabeth Taylor,” featuring archival footage of the iconic Hollywood actress. Wade initially seemed supportive of Swift’s use of the showgirl image, sharing related content on social media. However, her online presence has dwindled in recent months.
The lawsuit also names Swift’s trademark management company, record label, and merchandising arm as defendants. It alleges that the album and associated products have caused “textbook reverse confusion,” where the junior user’s overwhelming commercial presence overshadows the senior user’s mark. The lawsuit seeks an injunction to prevent Swift and her entities from using the “Life of a Showgirl” name and imagery, along with monetary damages to be determined in court. Swift’s representative has declined to comment on the lawsuit.
According to the lawsuit, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office refused to grant a trademark registration for “Life of a Showgirl” due to potential confusion with existing trademarks, including “Confessions of a Showgirl.” The lawsuit argues that Swift’s team would have been aware of the existence and trademark of “Confessions of a Showgirl” and continued using the contested designation despite this knowledge. The legal action aims to protect Wade’s brand and seek compensation for damages caused by the alleged infringement.
