A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta has experienced a surge in interest following a mention on a popular American TV series, with hopes of driving a busy summer season. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was featured in a recent episode of the acclaimed TV medical drama “The Pitt,” where a character announces a trip to the site in the Canadian Rocky Mountains foothills. Used for centuries by Indigenous peoples to drive bison herds over a cliff for harvesting, the site features an interpretive center exploring Blackfoot culture and ecology. Quinton Crow Shoe, the head of marketing at the site, noted a rise in visitor curiosity triggered by the TV show mention, leading to increased social media engagement. The site, a World Heritage Site since 1981, normally attracts around 60,000 visitors annually. Crow Shoe anticipates the recent interest boost will translate into higher attendance during the peak season from May to September, buoyed by promotions like the Canada Strong Pass. Collaborating with other attractions in southern Alberta, Head-Smashed-In aims to draw visitors to explore the diverse region. Alberta’s tourism efforts capitalized on the TV show mention with a promotional video and social media posts, showcasing the global appeal of the province’s historical and cultural landmarks.
