B.C. Transplant is urging more residents of British Columbia to consider registering as organ donors following a record-breaking year in 2025, where 575 individuals in the province received life-altering surgeries. Since executing its inaugural kidney transplant in 1968, B.C. Transplant has overseen organ donations and transplants across the region.
The organization attributed these successful surgeries to the contributions of 232 donors, comprising 146 deceased individuals and 86 living donors who facilitated procedures like kidney and liver transplants. Dr. Sean Keenan, the provincial medical director of donation services, acknowledged the tragedy of every deceased donor and commended the families for their selfless decisions.
Keenan noted that the significant increase in surgeries last year was due to the availability of more organs from donors, some of which were also shared across provinces. He emphasized the collaborative effort and yearly fluctuations that impact transplant numbers.
Registering as an organ donor is open to everyone, irrespective of their health conditions, as rigorous testing ensures the safety of organs for transplantation and offers hope to those awaiting life-saving procedures.

Chapman had been on the transplant waitlist since May and had been on dialysis for over two years. Debbie Wargovcsik shared the poignant story of her son Beau, who expressed his desire to be an organ donor at the age of 23. Tragically, Beau suffered a seizure and subsequently slipped into a coma. When faced with the decision to withdraw life support, Wargovcsik and her husband honored Beau’s wish to donate his organs, highlighting the profound impact of his altruistic decision.
