Dongfeng Debuts Affordable EV Lineup in Montreal

Dongfeng, a prominent Chinese automaker, has introduced its electric vehicle lineup at Montreal’s Old Port, marking its entry into the Canadian automotive market. The company is currently in the process of certifying two of its EV models for sale in Canada, ensuring they meet all safety and regulatory standards.

The showcased models include the compact EV named BOX 01 and the electric SUV known as Vigo. Both vehicles are expected to be priced below $35,000, as stated by Julie Mazorra Fernández, the director of North World Industry, the official Canadian distributor for Dongfeng.

“We aim to offer affordable vehicles to the Canadian market,” Mazorra Fernández expressed to CBC during a morning interview. The company plans to make these models available for purchase sometime next year.

Reduced tariffs have sparked an increased interest in Chinese EVs, with the Canadian government recently lowering tariffs on these vehicles from 100 percent to 6.1 percent. This move allows for the import of up to 49,000 Chinese EVs annually, with a substantial portion designated for models priced under $35,000.

Dongfeng’s Vigo model, described by the manufacturer as an ‘EV SUV combining practical range, modern styling, and everyday comfort,’ was among the first batch of Chinese EVs to arrive in Canada. With the Lotus Eletre, produced by China’s Geely, also making its debut in the Canadian market, the influx of Chinese EVs is gaining momentum.

The choice to launch in Quebec is strategic, with the province being an attractive market for electric vehicle manufacturers due to the populace’s familiarity with EVs and cost-effective electricity rates. After establishing a presence in Quebec, Dongfeng plans to expand to British Columbia and then Ontario.

Despite challenges in the Canadian market, Chinese automakers view Canada as a crucial stepping stone for entering the U.S. market. Industry experts see Canada as a testing ground for Chinese cars in North America, given its similarities to the U.S. market in consumer preferences and industry regulations.

The entry of lower-priced Chinese EVs is expected to drive competition in the North American auto industry, potentially leading to more competitive pricing and improved offerings for consumers. As Dongfeng’s certification process progresses, details regarding the availability of their EV models in the market will be disclosed.
