Andrew Scott, while studying at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, received advice from a professor emphasizing the enduring nature of painting compared to rock music. This message struck a chord with Scott, who was faced with a crucial decision in 1991. Despite being three art history credits shy of earning a bachelor’s degree, Scott contemplated whether to complete his education or pursue a music career with Sloan, a band where he served as the drummer.
Ultimately, Scott chose to prioritize his music aspirations over finishing his degree, citing the band’s promising future and the excitement of the opportunities ahead. This decision was made even before Sloan released their debut album, showcasing Scott’s leap of faith in the band’s potential longevity.
Over the years, Sloan has become a prominent figure in the Canadian music scene, releasing 14 studio albums, including critically acclaimed works like “Twice Removed” and “One Chord to Another.” Their music has become ingrained in Canadian culture, with hits like “Money City Maniacs” and “The Rest of My Life.”
In recognition of his contributions to NSCAD University, Scott is being honored as a Life Fellow during the May convocation ceremony. This prestigious award acknowledges individuals who have had a significant and lasting impact on the university. Scott expressed his gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the support and pride of his family, especially his mother.
Despite his success in music, Scott’s passion for painting has never waned. He balances his music career with his love for art, often immersing himself in museums and galleries while on tour. Painting has been a constant in Scott’s life, resurfacing in the late 1990s and remaining a meaningful pursuit alongside his musical endeavors.
