The recently concluded 2026 Juno Awards Gala saw Canadian pop sensation Justin Bieber, despite being the most nominated artist with six nods, leaving empty-handed as Tate McRae emerged victorious, claiming four Junos including album of the year, artist of the year, single of the year, and pop album of the year.
This year’s Juno Awards Gala, held on March 28, was co-hosted by Damhnait Doyle from CBC Music Mornings and Odario Williams from CBC Music Afterdark. A total of 47 awards were presented, showcasing historic victories and debuts by several artists.
While both Bieber and McRae were absent from the gala to witness their wins, they are still contenders for the TD Juno Fan Choice at the upcoming Juno Awards on March 29, where the final four awards will be announced.
Daniel Caesar, the Toronto R&B singer, kicked off the night by securing the songwriter of the year award, surpassing strong contenders like Justin Bieber, Tate McRae, the Beaches, and Jessie Reyez. Though absent at the gala, Caesar is set to grace the Juno Awards stage to accept the International Achievement Award and perform tracks from his award-winning album “Son of Spergy.”
Aysanabee clinched victories for both alternative album of the year and contemporary Indigenous artist of the year, expressing gratitude to his all-female team during his win for the latter category. This marks his second nomination and first win in this field, with plans to step aside in the future to make room for other Indigenous artists.
Billy Talent was honored with the prestigious Humanitarian Award for their extensive charitable work over the past 25 years, supporting various organizations like War Child and Kids Help Phone. The band’s drummer, Aaron Solowoniuk, who battles Multiple Sclerosis, also received recognition for his contributions to the cause.
The Beaches celebrated their win for rock album of the year, emphasizing the significance of the Junos in their career and their deep connection to the Canadian music scene. Meanwhile, Sadboi, a Toronto-based hip-hop, R&B, and electronic artist, snagged the rap album/EP of the year award for her work on “Dry Cry.”
Several artists, including Kazdoura, Aaron Paris, and Debby Friday, celebrated their first-ever Juno wins for their outstanding contributions to the music industry. Notably, Karena Evans, a Toronto-born filmmaker, secured the music video of the year award for her work on “luther” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA.
Saukrates, a legendary hip-hop artist, finally clinched his first Juno after a 30-year journey, winning the rap single of the year award. Additionally, Maestro Fresh Wes triumphed in the children’s album of the year category, marking his return to Juno glory after nearly three decades.
